Amid COVID-19, telehealth to treat opioid use disorder

The Ryan Haight Act of 2008 – requiring a physician to examine a patient in-person before prescribing a controlled substance – was a barrier to treating substance use disorder via telehealth. But as Health and Human Services Secretary Alex AzarĀ declared a public health emergency for Covid-19, DEA-registered practitioners may now prescribe without an in-person medical evaluation.
