The cost of opioid use to Australia: $15.7billion and 2,203 deaths

Released yesterday by the National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University, the national estimate on the social and economic costs of opioid use is the 1st in 13 years. In the 2015-2016 financial year, ‘extra-medical’ opioid use incurred $5.6billion in direct tangible costs, including healthcare, reduced productivity and worker absence, crime and traffic accidents; and $10.1billion in intangible costs such as 2,203 deaths.
