Alcohol & drug abuse create ‘unsustainable burden’ on health service and society

Today’s report from Northern Ireland’s Comptroller and Auditor General estimates that alcohol misuse alone costs £900million each year through unemployment, physical and mental health, homelessness and crime. People seeking NHS help for drug addiction doubled from 2,107 in 2007 to 4,183 in 2019; drug deaths trebled in the past decade.
