People with alcohol use disorders tend to prioritize alcohol over alternative rewards, and the neural underpinnings of this are unclear. After training rats to lever press for alcohol and social reward, Amsterdam Medical University Center discovered that rats also favoured alcohol over other rewards, the brain region of interest being the anterior insula.
