31 Years of Continuous ISO Accreditation for Scottish Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centre
Scotland’s longest-standing private residential rehab is proud to be awarded the latest ISO 9001 accreditation.
Castle Craig Hospital has passed its latest ISO 9001 surveillance audit with zero non-conformities, marking 31 years of continuous accreditation to one of the world’s most rigorous quality management standards. The independent audit, carried out by Intertek in March 2026, found the clinic’s quality management system to be fully effective and mature, with no areas of concern and no corrective actions required.
Castle Craig has held ISO 9001 certification continuously since 1995*, making it the first addiction treatment centre in the UK to have achieved it. The standard is entirely voluntary and separate from our regulation by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. No UK or Irish regulator requires addiction treatment providers to hold it.
While strong regulatory frameworks exist across the UK, there remains no single, internationally consistent standard for quality management across providers. Voluntary benchmarks such as ISO 9001 can therefore play an important role in helping families navigate treatment decisions with greater clarity and confidence.
Dr Peter McCann, Medical Director at Castle Craig, said: “Ten years of continuous accreditation reflects a sustained commitment and a culture of accountability that runs through every part of our organisation. ISO 9001 is rigorous and independent, and passing a surveillance audit with zero non-conformities a decade on from our first certification confirms our commitment to the highest standards of patient care.
In addiction treatment, where outcomes depend on trust as much as clinical expertise, and where patients and families are making one of the most important decisions of their lives, that consistency is something we take very seriously.”
Castle Craig’s audit result noted an 84% average treatment completion rate, above sector benchmarks, alongside structured care pathways from admission through to aftercare and a patient feedback programme feeding directly into service improvements. The audit’s SWOT analysis identified no weaknesses, no threats, and no opportunities for improvement.
- It was previously named ISO 9002, until it merged into ISO 9001 in 2000.
