Ice Age origins of the world’s 4th most common addictive drug

After alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, betel nut is the world’s 4th most widely consumed psychoactive substance. In The Conversation, 5 researchers shared the prehistoric roots of betel nut chewing. Their new study suggests betel nut use originated much earlier than previously believed – perhaps as long as 25,000 years ago.
