Violent Children and Desperate Parents
In this ground-breaking documentary series, pioneering therapist Mandy Saligari takes on some of the UKʼs most violent and difficult children, trying to figure out what makes their behaviour so extreme and how to handle it. Mandyʼs brand of therapy focuses on her belief that no child is ever beyond help, however bad their behaviour has become. She believes that the problem is never just the child, but the family dynamics in which they grow up. Mandy wants to prove her methods work by taking her ideas out of the consulting room and directly into the homes of some of the UKʼs most violent children.
In the first episode, Mandy is in South Wales dealing with one of the most troubling cases she has ever seen. Jack is just months away from turning ten, the age of criminal responsibility, and he is at risk of being locked up because of how badly he terrorises his single dad Damien. Jack has been expelled from school for attacking a younger pupil, and the relentless violence against his dad is making home life a misery.
When Mandy arrives to meet them, she witnesses Jackʼs brutal onslaught of kicks, punches, spitting and swearing that he aims at his father before the child turns his aggression on Mandy herself. Even a simple trip to the supermarket becomes a series of running battles down the aisles.
Over a period of weeks, Mandy attempts to solve Jackʼs huge behavioural issues. Her groundbreaking therapy aims to take the ʻproblem childʼ label off Jack and deal with all the familyʼs problems together.
Mandyʼs unconventional methods see Jack and Damien run headlong together into a freezing sea and drive a 4×4 across the Welsh countryside. She also helps Damien face up to his own childhood trauma. Can she force a change in all their behaviour before it is too late?
This is a new 4-part series starting on Feb 10th at 9pm, on Channel 5.
