Tobacco and alcohol trump gambling as Australia’s cost of addictions

Gambling is the 4th most prevalent addiction, with only 13% of the estimated $80.3billion cost of addiction, according to a KPMG and Rethink Addiction report on addiction in Australia. The greatest drainers in the cost of addiction were tobacco at 45% ($35.8billion) in 2021 and alcohol at 28% ($22.6billion). Other drugs cost 16% ($12.9billion).
