Washington state avoids decriminalizing drugs

Washington state has avoided default statewide decriminalization of drug possession on 1 July. Bill SB 5536 – 2023-24 Concerning controlled substances, counterfeit substances, and legend drug possession and treatment, signed by Gov Jay Inslee yesterday, will make possessing or publicly using drugs a gross misdemeanor offense – a higher penalty than current law.
