The Addiction academic journal follows 4 principles when it comes to terminology – and Principle 1 is that “Everyone is allowed to refer to themselves as they wish” citing that “Members of 12-Step groups often refer to themselves as ‘addicts’ or ‘alcoholics’“. DB News adds: those who see these terms as stigmatising are the stigmatisers.
