The 1st wave of the devastating opioid epidemic began in the US with the abuse of prescription painkillers in the early 2000s. The 2nd wave involved an increase in heroin use, starting around 2010. The 3rd wave of powerful synthetic opioids such as fentanyl started around 2015. Now experts are observing a 4th phase: stimulants mixed with fentanyl.
