Alcohol and the NHS: problem and solution

“Alcohol kills over 1200 Scots per year. That is 3 times as many as when I entered the NHS in 1979,” Alastair MacGilchrist of think tank Reform Scotland highlights. “When you also take account of the many diseases in which alcohol plays a part, such as heart disease, stroke and cancer… the death toll rises 3-4 fold, about 4000 deaths in Scotland per year.”
