New additive in US opioid supply

“As an addiction medicine doctor, I have seen a dramatic escalation in the number of cases of a withdrawal syndrome in patients with opioid use, sometimes even requiring life support. The culprit is the addition of the veterinary sedative medetomidine, a new additive in the fentanyl supply, which can cause both overdoses and complicated withdrawal,” Cara Borelli of Yale School of Medicine warned.
