Companies accused of recklessly marketing and distributing prescription opioid painkillers are paying about $58billion to settle lawsuits over their role in the addiction crisis. About 46% of that is going to local governments, who have little to no training in addiction policy, resulting in spending decisions that addiction recovery experts said are unlikely to save lives or treat substance use disorders.
