First-time experiences with alcohol and cannabis can predict future substance abuse

A John Hopkins University study confirmed that the initial subjective effects of alcohol and cannabis vary greatly among users and could signal future substance abuse problems. People who felt “relief” during their 1st alcohol use had higher odds of developing alcohol use disorder; those who felt “energized” during their 1st cannabis use had a higher odds of developing cannabis use disorder.
