Addiction: designer proteins rewire neural pathways

University of California and the National Institute on Drug Abuse used a bespoke biochemical method that involved custom-engineered proteins: ion channels, tailored to respond to cocaine. In a demonstration of neural engineering, these proteins can neutralize the drug’s reward effects, dampening the feedback loop that perpetuates addiction.
