Cannabis and child maltreatment deaths

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services revealed that marijuana was the most common drug linked to child maltreatment fatalities involving caregiver substance use. 50% of the child deaths involving substance use were related to marijuana in 2024-2025, from impaired supervision, unsafe sleep environments, drowning, neglect, and other preventable dangers, as well as direct abuse.
