US drug overdoses: flawed modelling?

Last June, mainstream media reported a surge in US drug overdose deaths in early 2025, based on data from the CDC. A new Northwestern University study “found that surge was not real – the apparent spike was a statistical modeling artifact, not a true reversal in overdose trends”. The study found overdose deaths fell after a peak in August 2023.
